Decades Later, Laurie Colwin's Books 'Will Not Let You Down' - KWIT

Multitudinous years ago, Laurie Colwin began an essay she wrote about the magic of roast chicken like this: "There is nothing like roast chicken. It is serviceable and agreeable, the perfect dish no matter what the circumstances. Elegant or homey, a dish for a dinner party or a family supper, it will not let you down." Substitute the clause "Laurie Colwin's writing" for the words "roast chicken," take some poetic allowances with the word "dish," and you'll have an approximate breed of Colwin's own elusive magic.

Her writing "will not let you down." It's never fussy or "literary," but rather, under an unassuming surface: It's smart, droll, and emotionally complex. I re-look over a lot of Colwin's work recently. She started out in the 1970s to write her novels and stories about contemporary life and manners, as well as her essays about eatables. The amazing thing is that so few of her observations — especially about her characters' emotional lives — feel dated. Clearly, those difficult-to-master basic elements of vogue never go out of fashion.

The digital publisher Open Road Media has just put out a bounty of Colwin in e-book format: four of her novels, three penniless story collections and her first collection of cooking essays called, simply, Home Cooking . The e-books are attractively packaged with intense watercolor paintings on their covers and appendices featuring a short biographical essay on Colwin and family photographs.

In the opening of Home ground Cooking , Colwin tells her readers: "I was taught in my Introduction to Anthropology [course in college], it is not just the Great Works of mankind that vamoose a culture. It is the daily things, like what people eat and how they serve it." She goes on to describe a fondly remembered meal of "beef stew and buttered noodles, runny cheese, and unadorned green salad with wonderful dressing." That same attentiveness to "the daily things," suffuses Colwin's fiction, where, in addition to plots about frustrated sweet and ambition, we hear a lot about the slumped brownies and salted almonds eaten by her characters — many of them well-heeled Wasps and German Jews who actual in Manhattan.

If you haven't read Colwin before, her 1982 novel, Family Happiness , would be a good one to start with. It's about a young wife and protect named Polly who is terrified of letting herself acknowledge how very smothered she feels by the constant enforced company of her large socially first family. Polly thinks of her domineering parents as being "medieval in their outlook" and building, through their children and grandchildren who are mostly scattered on Manhattan's Topmost East Side, "a network of fortified castles close to one another." The surprise here (and it appears in Chapter Two so I'm not spoiling anything) is that Polly-the-dormouse has an adoring lover.

There's always some amazing ingredient in Colwin's otherwise domesticated world — a freak accident that cuts short a marriage, as in the opening of Shine On Bright and Menacing Object or a difficult marriage with an emotionally remote spouse, as seen from the male point of view in Happy All The Time .

The novel whose thesis is, potentially, the real credibility strainer is Goodbye Without Leaving . There, our heroine, Geraldine, abandons grad school in English at the University of Chicago to go on the procedure for two years as the sole white back-up singer for Vernon and...

Retailer faces repercussion over 'Porn Star' onesies - Niagara Falls Review

In the egotistic world of fashion, making a statement can certainly be difficult. It can also be controversial – but not in the creative way.

It seems almost every week one discredit or retailer is apologizing for an offensive t-shirt, or pulling one item or another off their shelves after backlash from consumers.

Here’s a list of clothing items that got brands in to hot examination.

An online clothing store in the U.K. continues to sell baby blankets with the slogan ‘F--- Me Like A Pornstar’ and onesies with the words ‘Porn Act’ despite a massive online backlash.

As of Saturday morning, cafepress was still selling more than 130 items, including blankets, onesies and T-shirts for toddlers with slogans like ‘Infusion In The Front Poker In The Rear.’

“This content serves to reinforce women's second class status, as less than men, as mere objects for men's extravaganza and gratification,” Caitlin Roper, of women’s rights group Collective Shout, told The Independent .

She said Cafe Crowding’ “pro-rape 'humour' trivializes crimes of violence against women,” and reduces a global issue affecting millions of women every day to a “zest line of a joke.

“I can't believe I even have to argue that sexualized or porn-inspired imagery and slogans on baby clothes and merchandise is unacceptable,” she added.

Suppress, an organization working to abolish human trafficking and the sex trade in the Caribbean, tweeted: “Is there no Code of Ethics that exists to prevent merchants from developing slogans which recommend #pedophilia.”

Roper told The Independent she was shocked by Cafe Press’ response to her concerns.

“They suggested I redirect my energy and in lieu of of tweeting I should fill out reports. I countered that they should exercise some corporate social responsibility and asked if they were going to pay me to do their job for them.”

Roper tweeted: “According to @cafepress, it is the r of customers to regulate pro-rape material on their site #notbuyingit.’
